Q: How do you machine tantalum?

A: When maching tantalum by turning it is generally recommended to use ceramic tooling, e.g. uncoated cemented carbide1-4. Very sharp inserts with a high positive (as much as possible) rake are suggested for turning1. Turning speeds in the range 100-175 SFM (surface feet per minute) have been reported suitable1-3.

Q: Does tantalum bend or break?

A: The metal will scuff and show wear over time but holds up to a great deal of abuse without cracking, breaking, bending, etc. Natural Tantalum rings' color will not fade or change over time.

Q: At what temperature does tantalum oxidize?

A: The oxidation behavior of tantalum has been studied at 700°–1000°C at oxygen pressures ranging from 1 atm to 0.01 Torr O2. The oxidation involves oxide formation and oxygen dissolution in the metal. The rate of oxygen dissolution is governed by diffusion of oxygen in the tantalum metal.

A: Tantalum requires no such metallurgical shoring-up of weaknesses. In pure elemental form, it boasts a hardness of 200 Vickers and a tensile strength of 900 MPa, making it just as hard and almost twice as strong as the best steels.
