What is an electromagnetic flowmeter ?

Electromagnetic flowmeter (EMF) is a flow measurement instrument based on Faraday electromagnetic induction principle, mainly used to accurately measure the volume flow of conductive liquids (such as water, sewage, acid-base solutions, slurry, etc.).

The following are its core elements and characteristics:
1, Working principle
The electromagnetic flowmeter calculates the flow rate by measuring the induced potential generated by the cutting of magnetic field lines by a conductive fluid in a magnetic field. According to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, the magnitude of the induced potential is proportional to the fluid flow velocity, magnetic field strength, and inner diameter of the pipeline. The formula is:
\[ E = B \cdot V \cdot D \cdot K \]
Among them\ (B) is the magnetic induction intensity\ (V) is the average flow velocity of the fluid\ (D) is the inner diameter of the pipeline\ (K \) is the coefficient related to the magnetic field distribution.
The converter amplifies and converts the weak potential signal detected by the electrode into a standard current or digital signal, achieving flow display and transmission.
2, Structural composition
1. Magnetic circuit system: Generate a uniform magnetic field, usually using alternating magnetic fields (such as power frequency or low-frequency rectangular waves) to avoid electrode polarization problems caused by DC magnetic fields.
2. Measurement catheter: made of non-magnetic materials (such as stainless steel, fiberglass), lined with insulating materials (such as polytetrafluoroethylene, ceramics) to prevent corrosion and isolate electromagnetic interference.
3. Electrode: Non magnetic material (such as stainless steel), used to capture induced potential, needs to be flush with the lining to reduce flow obstruction.
4. Converter * *: Responsible for signal amplification, filtering, and digital processing, supporting bidirectional flow measurement, self diagnostic function, and multiple output modes (such as 4-20mA, HART communication).
5. Shell: Made of ferromagnetic material, it shields external electromagnetic interference and protects internal components.
3, Core Features
1. Unstoppable measurement: There are no moving parts inside the measuring tube, no pressure loss, suitable for slurry, corrosive fluids, and large pipe diameter scenarios.
2. High precision and stability: The measurement accuracy is not affected by fluid density, viscosity, temperature, and pressure, and the range ratio can reach 150:1, suitable for complex working conditions.
3. Bidirectional measurement: It can detect forward and reverse flow and calculate the cumulative difference.
4. Corrosion resistance *: Optional lining (such as PTFE, ceramic) and electrode materials, suitable for corrosive media such as strong acids and alkalis.
5. Intelligent function: supports remote monitoring, self diagnosis, parameter setting, and multi protocol communication (such as MODBUS, HART).
